New Lights embraced the religious revivals of the First Great Awakening that spread through the colonies. They preached against the religious abandonment caused by the Age of Enlightenment but continued to emphasize democracy and anti-elitism, creating division with the Old Lights.
Among the New Lights were Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield.
