The House of Burgesses was established in 1619 serving as a representative government in Virginia. From 1642 to 1776, the House of Burgesses was an instrument of government alongside the royally-appointed colonial governor and the upper-house Council of State in the General House. It started a tradition of representative governments all throughout the English colonies and played a significant role towards the American Revolution.
