Salutary neglect, also called benign neglect, was the lax enforcement of British law and trade regulations practiced by the British government towards its American colonies in the 1600s and early 1700s. Afterwards, Britain began to try to enforce stricter rules and more direct management, which included the disallowment of laws to go into effect that were passed in colonial legislatures. This eventually led to the American Revolutionary War.
