George Whitefield, also known as George Whitfield, was an Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. George Whitefield andJonathan Edwards were influential figures during the First Great Awakening.

George Whitefield (pronounced “whit-field”) was the foremost evangelical of the First Great Awakening. Like many evangelical ministers, Whitefield was itinerant, traveling the countryside instead of having his own church and congregation. Between 1739 and 1740, he electrified colonial listeners with his brilliant oratory.
