Executive Order 9981 was signed by President Truman in 1948 and banned segregation in the American Armed Forces. The executive order helped improve civil rights for the over one million African Americans within the armed forces.
Despite considerable resistance to Executive Order 9981 from the military, nearly all of the military was integrated by the end of the Korean War. It was a major progression in strengthening civil rights.
