Henry David Thoreau was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. He was a leading figure in the transcendentalism movement. Thoreau was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the fugitive slave laws while praising and defending the abolitionist John Brown.
