The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or North Atlantic Alliance is an international military alliance established after WWII. It was created against the Soviet Union as a mutual-defense treaty should there be a communist invasion.
NATO increased tensions between Western democracies and Soviet-aligned countries. The Soviet Union responded with the Warsaw Pact, a collection of Soviet satellite states, as the Eastern measure against a Western invasion.
